Now, the current object of my affections is an amazing trilogy. The Night Angel Trilogy is written by Brent Weeks and was released October, November and December of last year. Each book has about 600 pages and it's 600 pages of pure awesome.
Three months ago, I was perusing chapters, looking for crap to buy and I just picked up 300 dollars worth of books. I've read about.. 60 dollars out of that yet, and that's mostly in Drizzt books. Now, the first two books of the Trilogy have been sitting here, and I merely picked them up because I was like, "Ooh. An assassin on the front. That's hot." (Note to authors: Hot assassins on the cover makes people buy your books?) For three months, I never even opened them. I'd get around to it, of course, but it wasn't a priority.
If I had known at the time how much I would love the series, I would have finished them a long time ago.
WOW. The first book was amazing from start to finish. I'm mid-second book and I bought the third for tomorrow's reading. If you aren't too greatly offended by child-rape, whores, assassinry and slum life, it's fantastic. A few parts were a tad too "woah. no." for me to read seriously.. Like, in the beginning guild leader and fantastic bully, Rat, had attempted to man-rape main character, Azoth before Azoth killed his scrawny ass. It was.. wow. And the main girl character got her face all cut up. It was crazy. Very nitty gritty, but I think that's why I loved it so much.
Out of about 10-20 female characters, only ONE isn't a prostitute. No shit. But even with all of the girls being whores, you still love them. Momma K? She was AWESOME. Her brilliance just shone right out of the pages.
Other parts were simply hysterical. Like, the King.. No one had the nerve to swear in front of him, so his swearing vocabulary was limited to: "You shitting.. shitting.. shit!" Which made me lol LOTS. Nearing the end of the book he actually learns the word "fuck",to the amusement of Durzo (best. character. ever.)
And when two characters were talking at some event, one of them stops talking as "breasts went by". It was funny. So very funny.
Go read these books right now.
The Way of Shadows
Shadow's Edge
and
Beyond the Shadows
The only thing I have a problem with is that "assassins" are pretty lame in this story. "Wetboys" are the like, super sayians of assassins... And it sounds funny when I start talking about "wetboys" LOLOL.
If it wasn't such a weird term, I'd use it all the time.
